Who is Bikram?

Bikram Choudhury created this series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. He began practicing yoga at the age of four with Bishnu Ghosh, the brother of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi. At age 18, Bikram injured his knee so severly in a weight lifting accident that doctors predicted he would never walk again. Bikram, however, refused to accept this diagnosis and immediately began practicing yoga with his guru to heal his knee. Within 6 months, he had fully recovered, and it was from this experience of the incredible therapeutic powers of yoga that Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Series was born. What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class, the original hot yoga, is a series of 26 postures with 2 breathing exercises practiced in a room heated to 105°F with 40% humidity in 90 minutes. Each posture in the sequence is designed to safely stretch and open the body in preparation for the next posture.

The Bikram Method stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, and systematically moves fresh, oxygenated blood to 100% of the body. It restores all systems to a healthy working order, just as nature intended. Bikram Choudhury used modern medical measurement and research to scientifically design this specific sequence of the 90 minute program.

Physically accessible to people of all ages, fitness levels and conditions, Bikram Yoga leads to increased mental clarity and ultimate relaxation for practitioners by building a strong physical and mental foundation. “Never too bad, never too late, never too old, never too sick to start experiencing the most scientifically designed, therapeutic yoga routine.” ~Bikarm Choudhury
